Literature is present in TV fiction through adaptations, but literary works are also featured directly onscreen, sometimes serving as a homage showrunners pay to their literary sources, sometimes to set the mood of a particular episode or a season arc, sometimes for a didactic purpose. This article intends to examine in depth the symbiotic relation between both media, using the analysis of some examples to do so, and thus prove that intermediality not only contributes to elevate the TV series but it also provides the literary works the series refers to with new life.

New hydroxyl substituted 3-arylbenzo[f]coumarins (compounds 6–10) have been designed and synthesized. Their electrochemical redox mechanisms, and the influence of one or two hydroxyl groups, in different positions on the coumarin scaffold, was investigated by cyclic, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry, at a glassy carbon electrode, at different pHs, and a comparative study was performed. The structural information obtained enabled a better understanding of the structure/electrochemical relationship of hydroxyl substituted 3-arylbenzo[f]coumarins, compounds with important antioxidant properties

The 15th International Electronic Conference on Synthetic Organic Chemistry session Bioorganic, Medicinal and Natural ProductsPhenolic compounds are bioactive substances widely distributed in the vegetable kingdom. They act as natural antioxidants, and their presence contributes to the color, flavor and aroma of food. This group of micronutrients is composed of one or more aromatic benzene rings with one or more hydroxyl groups and their redox properties are related with their chemical structure characteristics. The knowledge of their redox potentials may help the food industry, because when phenolic compounds are oxidized they could affect the quality of the wines, beers, grape juices, etc. Coumarins are a large family of compounds, of natural and synthetic origin, that show important biological activities. Therefore, they occupy an important place in the study of natural products and synthetic organic chemistry. Recent studies pay special attention to their antioxidative, anticarcinogenic and enzymatic inhibition properties. Their preparation, and the versatility of the synthetic methodology, allowed us obtaining a wide family of compounds with substituent in different positions in the molecule. The election of these derivatives has considered the later pharmacological evaluation. The investigation of the properties of these compounds, the study of the structural pattern and the elucidation of their biological role is of great interest for further development of coumarin-like antioxidant drugs. The electrochemical behaviour of a group of differently substituted hydroxycoumarins was investigated using cyclic, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry, in aqueous media at a glassy carbon electrode over the whole pH range. The antioxidant reactivity and capacity were also evaluated through a competition assay with hydroxyl radical (OH•) and DMPO like ORAC-FL methodology. Number and positions of the hydroxyl groups were important factors in the antioxidant activities against peroxyl radical of both types of coumarins derivativesWe are grateful to the Xunta de Galicia (PGIDIT09CSA030203PR) and Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo (FIS PS09/00501) for the partial financial support. The 13th International Electronic Conference on Synthetic Organic Chemistry session Bioorganic Chemistry and Natural ProductsWith the aim to find out the structural features for the MAO inhibitory activity and selectivity, in the present communication we report the design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of a new series of 8-bromo-6-methyl-3-phenylcoumarin derivatives without substituent and with different number of methoxy substituent in the 3-phenyl ring. The substituent in this new scaffold was introduced in the 3', 4' and/or 5' positions of the 3-phenyl ring of the coumarin moiety. The synthesized compounds 3-6 were evaluated as MAO A and B inhibitors using R-(-)-deprenyl (selegiline) and Iproniazide as reference inhibitors, showing, most of them, MAO-B inhibitory activities in the nanomolar range. Compounds 3 (11.05±0.81 nM), 4 (3.23±0.49 nM) and 5 (7.12±0.01 nM) show higher activity than selegiline (IC50 = 19.60 nM), and high MAO-B selectivity with 9,050- fold, 30,960-fold and 14,045-fold inhibition levels, with respect to the MAO-A isoformWe are grateful to the Spanish Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo (PI061457 and PI061537) and to Xunta da Galicia (BTF20303PR, PXIB203022PR and CSA019203PR) and Fondazione Banco Sardegna (Italy) for financial support. The objective of this work was to evaluate the interference of bioassay methods on the entomopathogenic fungi selection, using four Beauveria bassiana isolates and Alphitobius diaperinus adults. Regarding the inoculation form on insect mortality, the following methods were tested: insects immersion in a conidia suspension; spraying of a suspension over the insects; and surface treatment with eight concentrations. In order to evaluate the interference of immersion time on mortality, insects were immersed in a fungal suspension for 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 seconds. Conidia produced on rice, insects, and synthetic medium were used to evaluate the influence of substrate on the virulence of the isolates. UNIOESTE 4 isolate and CG 152 were the most virulents for the methods immersion and spray, respectively; however, mortality was low in all isolates for the surface treatment. Mortality was proportional to the time during which insects stayed immersed, with a tendency to become stable after 40 seconds. Conidia from isolates CG 71 and CG 152 produced on insects were less virulent. The methods may influence bioassay results in the fungi selection for insects control

Clinicopathological features and prognostic significance of CTNNB1 mutation in low-grade, early-stage endometrial endometrioid carcinoma

Low-grade and early-stage endometrioid endometrial carcinomas (EECs) have an overall good prognosis but biomarkers identifying patients at risk of relapse are still lacking. Recently, CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation has been identified as a potential risk factor of recurrence in these patients. We evaluate the prognostic value of CTNNB1 mutation in a single-centre cohort of 218 low-grade, early-stage EECs, and the correlation with beta-catenin and LEF1 immunohistochemistry as candidate surrogate markers. CTNNB1 exon 3 hotspot mutations were evaluated by Sanger sequencing. Immunohistochemical staining of mismatch repair proteins (MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6), p53, beta-catenin, and LEF1 was performed in representative tissue microarrays. Tumours were also reviewed for mucinous and squamous differentiation, and MELF pattern. Nineteen (8.7%) tumours harboured a mutation in CTNNB1 exon 3. Nuclear beta-catenin and LEF1 were significantly associated with CTNNB1 mutation, showing nuclear beta-catenin a better specificity and positive predictive value for CTNNB1 mutation. Tumours with CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation were associated with reduced disease-free survival (p = 0.010), but no impact on overall survival was found (p = 0.807). The risk of relapse in tumours with CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation was independent of FIGO stage, tumour grade, mismatch repair protein expression, or the presence of lymphovascular space invasion. CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation has a negative impact on disease-free survival in low-grade, early-stage EECs. Nuclear beta-catenin shows a higher positive predictive value than LEF1 for CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation in these tumoursThis research was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (PI17/01723), co-financed by the European Development Regional Fund ‘A way to achieve Europe’ (FEDER

The objective of this work was to evaluate Beauveria bassiana (Bb), diatomaceous earth (TD) and effective microorganisms (EM-4), associated or not, to Alphitobius diaperinus control, and the EM-4 effect on B. bassiana development. The control agents (Bb, TD and EM-4), in different concentrations and combinations, were applied in a mixture of litter and chicken food, where insects had been left per ten days. Conidia germination, colony-forming units (CFU), vegetative growth and the productivity of Bb conidia were evaluated when in contact with a filtered and non filtered watery EM-4 suspension (1%). The highest indices of mortality were observed in the treatments TD + Bb + EM and TD + Bb in the highest concentrations. A synergic non additive effect was observed for TD + Bb in the three concentrations. In filtered EM-4 tests, no difference was observed related to the control of germination and CFU, however, vegetative growth and conidia productivity were negatively affected. The joint use of B. bassiana and diatomaceous earth for A. diaperinus populations management can minimize the use of chemical products
